Meet the Creative | Ani Spy

Working under the name Ani Spy, this is is a Jamaican visual artist whose work moves between portraiture, painting and mixed-media expression.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Ani’s relationship with art has always been deeply personal. Long before her work was presented as something to be collected, it was a means of expression, independence and perseverance. While studying civil engineering at The University of the West Indies, Mona, she turned increasingly to her artistic practice, producing and selling portraits as she worked to finance the completion of her degree. That period revealed something that has remained central to her practice: art was never simply a pastime, but something she could return to with purpose when circumstances demanded it.

Her work is especially drawn to people. Through portraiture, Ani explores character, expression and presence, approaching the human figure not simply as a likeness to be reproduced but as a personality to be interpreted. Across paint and other media, she combines observation with intuition, allowing colour, texture and gesture to carry as much meaning as the subject itself.

There is an immediacy to Ani’s work that reflects the way she creates. Her practice is instinctive but attentive — concerned with the details that make a face, a posture or a moment feel recognisable while still leaving room for artistic interpretation.

Her background also gives her work an unusual duality. The discipline required of engineering exists alongside the freedom of visual expression: precision meeting experimentation, structure meeting emotion. Rather than belonging neatly to one medium or visual language, Ani’s work continues to evolve across portraiture, painting and multimedia pieces.

Under the name Ani Spy, she creates from a distinctly Jamaican point of view while allowing her subjects to remain universal. Her work is ultimately concerned with people — how they are seen, remembered and transformed through the hand of the artist.
